What is BMI and how do you interpret it?
BMI (Body Mass Index) is a simple indicator that gives a rough estimate of whether your weight is proportional to your height. It’s calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms by the square of your height in meters:
WHO BMI ranges
- Below 18.5 — underweight
- 18.5–24.9 — normal weight
- 25–29.9 — overweight
- 30 and above — obese
BMI is a starting point, not a final diagnosis — it doesn’t account for muscle mass, age, or body fat distribution. If you want to take concrete action (lose weight, build muscle), it’s worth going a step further and checking your total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) — and then letting AI build a meal plan tailored to your goal.
Table: healthy weight for your height
The weight range that gives a BMI within the WHO healthy range (18.5–24.9). Values rounded to whole kilograms.
| Height | Healthy weight | Overweight from | Obesity from |
|---|---|---|---|
| 150 cm | 42–56 kg | 57 kg | 68 kg |
| 155 cm | 45–59 kg | 61 kg | 73 kg |
| 160 cm | 48–63 kg | 65 kg | 77 kg |
| 165 cm | 51–67 kg | 69 kg | 82 kg |
| 170 cm | 54–71 kg | 73 kg | 87 kg |
| 175 cm | 57–76 kg | 77 kg | 92 kg |
| 180 cm | 60–80 kg | 81 kg | 98 kg |
| 185 cm | 64–85 kg | 86 kg | 103 kg |
| 190 cm | 67–89 kg | 91 kg | 109 kg |
| 195 cm | 71–94 kg | 96 kg | 115 kg |
How to read your result
- Underweight (below 18.5): may mean nutrient deficiencies. Consider increasing your calorie intake with nutritious foods and talk to a doctor.
- Normal weight (18.5–24.9): maintain it with a balanced diet and activity. If you care about your physique, body composition matters more than weight alone.
- Overweight (25–29.9): a moderate calorie deficit of about 300–500 kcal a day below your needs lets you lose weight without the yo-yo effect.
- Obesity (30 and above): increases the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure — plan weight loss together with a doctor or dietitian.
BMI for children, older adults and athletes
For children and teenagers, BMI is compared with age- and sex-specific percentile charts, not adult ranges. For older adults, doctors often accept a slightly higher BMI, as a small weight reserve can be beneficial. For athletes and very muscular people, BMI may show overweight despite low body fat — waist circumference or body composition is a better measure then.
Frequently asked questions about BMI
How do you calculate BMI?
BMI (Body Mass Index) is calculated using the formula: BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height² (m). For example, a person weighing 65 kg at 1.68 m tall has a BMI of 65 ÷ (1.68 × 1.68) = 23.0.
What are the BMI ranges?
According to the World Health Organization (WHO): a BMI below 18.5 is underweight, 18.5–24.9 is normal weight, 25–29.9 is overweight, and 30 or above is obese. These ranges are averaged and don’t account for things like high muscle mass.
Is BMI an accurate indicator?
BMI is a simple, approximate indicator — it doesn’t distinguish between muscle mass and body fat, so it can overestimate the result for athletes or very muscular people. Despite its limits, it’s widely used as a quick reference point for weight-related health risk.
How much should I weigh for my height?
A healthy weight is one that gives a BMI of 18.5–24.9. For example, at 165 cm that’s about 51–67 kg, at 175 cm about 57–76 kg, and at 185 cm about 64–85 kg. The full height-to-weight table is on this page, and the calculator shows the range for your height.
How do I check if I’m overweight?
Enter your height and weight in the BMI calculator. A result of 25–29.9 means overweight, and 30 or more means obesity. It’s also worth measuring your waist — above 80 cm for women or 94 cm for men indicates excess abdominal fat, even with a normal BMI.
Are BMI ranges different for women and men?
For adults, the WHO ranges are the same for women and men. Differences in body composition mean that the same BMI can look different on different bodies, though.
How is BMI calculated for children?
For children and teenagers under 18 the formula is the same, but the result is compared with age- and sex-specific percentile charts, not adult ranges. It’s best to discuss the result with a pediatrician.
What should I do if my BMI shows overweight?
It’s worth checking your total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) and introducing a moderate calorie deficit alongside a balanced diet and physical activity. Consult a doctor or dietitian if you have any concerns about your health.
